Alumni News

We're making plans for the annual alumni meeting, reception and social to be held on May 7, 2005 and hope that you plan to be here for all the activities. The day will begin with open house that morning at the Alumni Center/Museum and continue with the annual meeting at 1 O'clock P.M. in the Wesley P. Smith Auditorium. Following the meeting, a reception for all alumni, parents and friends will be held in the chapel.(For the schedule of events for May 7, 2005 see the Meeting Page.)

Each year we honor a special group and this year it is former drama and musical play casts and support personnel that will be recognized at the retreat parade. We're hoping for a big turn out as there were literally hundreds of cadets, faculty, staff and friends who participated in the many productions directed by Paul Tate, John Strunk, Chuck LeBrand and others. If you are in contact with any of your fellow "actors", please encourage them to attend.

The Alumni social will be held at the Opelika Holiday Inn, beginning at 7 O'clock P.M. Holiday Inn is located at the intersection of I-85 and U.S. Highway 280. There has been a block of rooms reserved at a special rate for LWMA Alumni. These rooms will be held until two weeks before the week of May 7th. You may contact Holiday Inn at 334-745-6331 and ask for the LWMA room rate. (For more motels see our Lodging Page.) This year we will have special treats in that, as in the past, Tim Parker will bring those wonderful Gulf shrimp and Melanie and Matthew Arnold are cooking up barbecue pork, ribs and chicken with all the trimmings. There will also be a cash bar provided by Holiday Inn. The social is informal and a good chance to renew friendships and remember your days at LWMA and SII. If you plan to attend, please let us know by phone (256-896-2715),
e-mail ( or a note to LW Alumni Association, P.O. Drawer 550, Camp Hill, AL 36850.

MRS. BETTY JO DAVIS '46 writes:
RE: Miss Blaisdell, English Teacher

Miss Blasidell's career spanned many years. My mother, Edith Cadenhead Davis and her older sister, Mabel C. Farrar, were her students, Class of 1917. I think later, another younger sister, Frances C. Bolt was in her class, also. Aunt Mabel Farrar was on the Board of Trustees of the school for years. I graduated in 1946. I spent the World War II years there, thereby avoiding Columbus, Georgia's crowded schools. Dr. Ward was retired, but maintained an office in the main building. I did his correspondence for a while. Very interesting. Mr. Kirkland was a tough "Task Master", but I learned lessons that have served me well, both in the business world and private life.

The Academy is operating during a very difficult time. Enrollment is down which is creating a shortage of funds for operating and advertising expenses. In addition to these problems, the Academy has several lawsuits from a previous administration with which it has to deal. We now need the alumni to support the Academy more than ever before. This is not the time to debate how we got in the serious situation, but rather to UNITE AND PULL TOGETHER as former students. Please consider a financial gift to YOUR SCHOOL to help with the operating and advertising expenses.

For more information see the October 21, 2003 Letter.

For several years, the Alumni Association has provided financial assistance to deserving students as recommended by the Academy. This year we are please to award $1,410.00 to CHRISTOPHER PAUL GIRARD. Cadet Girard is a 10th grader and the 2005-2006 school year will be his fifth year at the Academy. The amount of the award each year is determined by the interest earned on our Certificate of Deposit.
